Shavkat Mirziyoyev, born in the Zaamin district of the Jizzakh region of the Uzbek SSR in 1957, is a well-known figure in Uzbekistan. His father, Islom Mirziyoyev, held various positions in Uzbekistan, including Minister of Trade and First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Uzbekistan.
After receiving his education at the Tashkent Institute of Railway Engineers and Mechanics, Shavkat Mirziyoyev worked in various positions in industry and public service. His career saw him appointed as hokim (governor) of the Samarkand region in 1996.
In 2001, he took on the role of First Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan. Then, in 2003, he became the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan. Following the death of Islam Karimov on September 8, 2016, the government appointed Shavkat Mirziyoyev as Acting President of Uzbekistan. He won the presidential election in October 2016 and secured re-election for a second term in the 2021 presidential elections.
