ABBA interesting facts

The Swedish musical quartet ABBA is named after the first letters of the names of the performers: Agneta Feltskog, Bjorn Ulveus, Benny Andersson, Annie-Frid Lingstad.

In 1974, the band presented Sweden at the European music contest Eurovision with the song Waterloo.  ABBA won a show at the Brighton House in England. After this victory quartet’s career went up.

Waterloo was the first song of ABBA, which became their number one in England. In the US, it reached the sixth line in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Although the Waterloo album itself climbed only to the 145th position of the Billboard 200 chart.

It is one of the most successful bands in the history of popular music and the most successful of the ones created in Scandinavia. Records of the group sold in more than 350 million copies around the world.

In 1978, the ABBA group was extremely popular. The quartet converted the old cinema into the sound recording studio of Polar Music in Stockholm. Other famous bands, such as Led Zeppelin (the album In Through the Out Door) and Genesis (Duke’s album), later recorded there.

Quartet’s singles ranked first in the charts: from the mid-1970s (“Waterloo”) to the early 1980s (“One of Us”), and the collections topped the world charts in the 2000s. The band’s music remains in the playlists of radio stations, and their albums sell well to this day.

They were the first representatives of continental Europe, who won first place in the charts of all leading English-speaking countries (USA, Great Britain, Canada, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand).

For outstanding merits in music on March 15, 2010, the ABBA group was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Benny and Frida were married until February 1981. Their marriage had been in trouble for quite some time. Benny met another woman, Mona Norklit, who he married in November of the same year.

The Formula 1 pilot Slim Borgudd took part in the session recordings of the band’s albums. His bolide ATS had the ABBA logos on the side air intakes of his car.
